Why Authentic Digital Connections Matter in Networking
I love the digital age. Not as much as I love mentoring, but the digital age has made life simpler. With the click of a mouse, I can transfer money across the United States, order products from around the world, and know the status of international events in near real time. I can even expand my network in half the time it takes to cold call, hot knock, data mine, or send emails or snail mail outs. It’s clear Why Authentic Digital Connections Matter in Networking and are shaping the way we make connections today. The right friend, connection, tweet, or all-important ‘Like,’ and I’m in, right? I especially liked when one author wrote:
“…more connections do not necessarily mean better connections.” (Miyauchi, 2025) By the way, consider why authentic digital connections matter in networking today more than ever.
Real social business networks can reflect real-world relationships if we want them to. Here are some truisms of digital networking, and it’s essential to understand that authentic connections in networking are why digital experiences matter.

Three Truisms that Matter in Digital Networking
1. With digital networking, you can cast a wide net and gather a large quantity of ‘connections’. In fact, reflecting on why authentic digital connections matter in networking can impact how you leverage these opportunities.
2. Sometimes we catch what we do not want, which diminishes the quality of the catch.
3. Wide nets require more work, which can translate into time, talent, and treasure.
These truisms have led me to believe that searching for authentic digital networks has, in fact, taught many of us to be strategic in our online relationships. But ultimately, the matter of why connections authentic to you are vital for networking cannot be overstated.
How to Be Effective in Digital Networking that Matters
Digital networking requires four components to truly be effective: Connection, Communication, Cultivation, and Consideration. A short blurb on each. Let’s dig into why, especially in today’s context, authentic digital connections are what matter most in networking.
1. Connections are the friends, followers, and connections we garner from Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, respectively, and are the who in the equation. Each of these social media networks attracts particular generations, but which generation are you trying to connect with? Millennials and Gen Z = mostly Facebook (?), Instagram, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. Celebrities = Twitter and Instagram, whereas Business Executives = LinkedIn, Alignable, and various other business networks. Where do you want to connect?
2. Communication is your ‘Why’ for connecting. Be upfront, bold, and even audacious about friending and connecting. The digital age requires brevity and transparency that translate into authenticity. How are you communicating your why? Let’s not forget, the matter of why authentic connections in digital networking count has never been greater.
3. Cultivation is how relationships are developed. Linking, following, and endorsing are not enough to establish authentic networks. For crying out loud, go meet somebody! Have a cup of coffee, share a meal, have a Zoom call, or, heaven forbid, chat on the phone. Clicking is not the totality of cultivating. There are more steps to determine who you want in your network.
4. Consideration is your investigation of ‘who’ to pursue the partnership with. If you pursue the partnership, then reciprocation should occur. This is the essence of the true Like, Endorse, Follow, Collaborate, Instigate, and Refer for your network partners. Are these things happening within your networks?
A Final Plug on Why Authentic Digital Connections Matter
The digital age has opened the floodgates for connecting with others, so we need to become strong swimmers, paddlers, and floaters if we want to earnestly benefit from technology. Ultimately, Why Authentic Digital Connections Matter in Networking is the central question, as it leads us to prioritize meaningful relationships over sheer numbers.
