Colonel Burl Randolph, Jr., US Army Retired
Author, The Iraq I Knew...
Colonel Burl Randolph, Jr., felt that way after each combat deployment to Iraq. In The Iraq I Knew: From Saddam Hussein to Weapons of Mass Destruction to Al Qaeda in Iraq, the series chronicles Colonel Randolph's adventures on each deployment.
In Book I: Into the Storm, Randolph recounts his experiences as a new US Army Field Artillery Captain from the alert and deployment to Desert Shield and then learns how to live in the harsh deserts of Saudi Arabia.
As the months ticked by in Saudi Arabia and in between SCUD alerts, eventually, all diplomatic solutions failed. Then, Randolph described the transition to Desert Storm combat operations while serving in the 1st Cavalry Division and the dangerous but vital missions they were assigned to help liberate Kuwait.
In The Iraq I Knew, Book I: Into the Storm, you will learn:
· The enormity of how the unit deployed to Saudi Arabia 60 days after alerted.
· Waiting months for a diplomatic solution and how it impacted Soldier morale.
· Surviving in a barren desert required using “burn barrels” and pee tubes.
· Later, we discovered the toxic dangers of "burn barrels."
· Describing the risks of daily living and the transition to combat operations.
· Explaining how the rigors of deployment, war, and redeployment affected Soldiers' lives, sometimes for years to come.
You will become keenly interested in contemporary military history through a personal firsthand account.
You will become fascinated by learning some of the elusive Army jargon.
You will become curious about the personal sacrifices of military personnel to ensure our freedoms.

A long time in the works, The Iraq I Knew... is a series on my (Colonel Burl Randolph, Jr.) experiences serving in Iraq. Each deployment was vastly different. Book I: Into the Storm chronicles the journey to liberate Kuwait from Iraq in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. This book introduces the reader to the trials and tribulations of preparing for and executing war, and proved to be the first deployment for most Soldiers but would not be the last. This operation took the entire US Army and a coalition of forces in conventional combat operations to help Kuwait regain its sovereignty. It also took the support of military families and a unified nation. Into the Storm laid the groundwork for my first storm into Iraq, a tempest that changed the world and my life.
