Oh, SNAP! Meet the Challenge

Many people are currently struggling without support from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP. The goal is to ensure that our government workers and others impacted by the Government Shutdown do not go hungry. It will take all of us to meet this challenge.

Iowa’s Initiative

On Thursday, October 30, 2025,

“Governor Kim Reynolds announced a $1 million statewide match to help Iowa’s six regional food banks respond to the ongoing SNAP benefits freeze.”

“River Bend Food Bank is eligible for up to $145,418 in matching funds – but only for cash donations received from Iowa residents while the benefit lapse is in effect.”

Once SNAP benefits are restored, the match will immediately end. Only donations already received will qualify.

I served during several government shutdowns, and trust me, it was an uneasy and terrible feeling. U.S. Service members are considered ‘Essential Personnel’ but not essential enough to be paid during that period. I salute those who were outraged enough during this shutdown to ensure that our Active-Duty Service Members were paid, but what about the next two weeks?

What You Can Do

You can help make the most of this opportunity by:

  • Donate now: riverbendfoodbank.org/donate – every Iowa dollar will be matched up to $145,418.
  • Spread the word: Encourage friends, colleagues, and community partners to give quickly while the match remains active.
  • Do not be bashful about giving: Any amount donated will be matched and help secure more food for those without.

The Impact

Just last week, the NorthPark Mall food pantry served 430 households in a single day — 82 of them first-time visitors. I am certain that this week, the number of first-time visitors will double or triple. And these are likely not all government workers, but also those affected by the shutdown: government contractors and businesses of all sizes that work with the government in various capacities.

Will you help meet the challenge and inspire others to do the same?
