The Value of Values, Part Deux
Values are always a subject of conversation. Values have always been important at work, in the community, and in business, but even more so today, especially considering political beliefs.
What is the value of values?
I believe that leadership is how values are instilled, and because I used the term instilled, it may also confirm my assertion that:
Values are taught and sometimes caught, but they are not typically bought; however, they must be defined.
Defining Values
Each of us may define values differently. Merriam-Webster defines values
1. something held in high regard; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.
2. a person’s principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life.
How do you define values? How does your organization define values?
What is the value of values?
1. Values help create the foundation for all facets of our lives.
2. Standards can assist us in discovering our purpose.
3. Morals help us develop and align the vision for ourselves and the organizations we lead.
4. Ideals help us pursue the right objectives for our careers and the organizations.
5. Principles help in nurturing and managing talent for the organization.
6. Beliefs support us in overcoming obstacles to success.
7. Values remind us where our successes came from.
8. Values help us define our financial objectives.
9. Values aid us in translating strategic objectives into tactical execution.
10. Values may help us design legacies that last, and those values may be how values are caught.
Why Values are Taught and Sometimes Caught
Do not assume that everyone in your life and organization shares your values. Organizational values can take time to develop and understand. Over time, some people may ‘catch‘ the values emulated by others. Values can create the COP: Common Operating Picture, which allows organizations to function based on the leader’s intent, even when content or substance is sparse.
So, what value do values have in your life and organization?
