” We all need networks.” But have you ever stopped to wonder: Who’s In Your Network?

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
Key Takeaways
- Assessing who’s in your network is crucial for personal and professional development.
- Exclusive networks hold higher value; not everyone can or should be included.
- Diversity in networks leads to better decision-making and more valuable connections.
- Diverse networks attract quality individuals, expanding opportunities and perspectives.
- The true benefit of networks lies in understanding and evaluating who’s in your network.

Who’s In Your Network? Does it matter?
Determining if it matters to really examine who’s in your network can decide if you even need one.
- Networks are Exclusive. Just like not everyone is, and cannot be, my friend, everyone can’t be in my network. Each network has its own value, but the lack of exclusivity diminishes that value.
- Each network has value. With the craze of social media. many people define value as the number of Likes, connections, friends, views, or whatever. Do not confuse value-something that has worth or provides importance to something else- with entertainment, something that amuses people.
- Valuable networks have diversity. “You can’t make a good-tasting cake with only one ingredient.” The best businesses combine the widest range of quality differences to make optimal decisions, products, and services. Cookie-cutter thinking only creates groups of people who agree on the same bad decision. It’s important to keep asking, “Who’s in your network?”
Why Diversity Matters
Contrary to the current climate, diversity matters and always has, especially in your networks. Here are some of the benefits of knowing who’s in your network to improve diversity in your network.
A. Diverse networks attract quality people. Diversity allows organizations to connect the DOTs: Diversity of Thoughts. When people’s input is genuinely accepted. they provide the most thoughtful suggestions they can, and that is where quality people gravitate to.
B. Diversity Expands Networks. A universal network provides better opportunities to meet people with greater proficiencies and more expansive networks. Knowing and working with all the same people may limit the skills and recommendations received. Where can diverse networks take us?
C. Opportunities Abound with Diversity. “We don’t go where we don’t know.” Diverse networks may reduce barriers to entry with unfamiliar people, places, processes and procedures. In this way, always considering who’s in your network can broaden your perspective, ignite your passions, and infuse your potential.
Having networks can be wonderful, but the real advantage is knowing the answer to that important question: Who’s in your network?
