To answer the question of ‘how to work for a toxic leader,’ some would say, “Very carefully.” Eventually, it happens to all of us: we meet the supervisor who refers to themself as ‘old school.’ The phrase ‘old school’ can be code for toxic leadership. Another phrase I have encountered is, “Loyalty means everything to me.” To me, that always meant, ‘Do whatever I tell you, or else,’ and sometimes the ‘or else’ occurred whether you complied or not.

In this segment, I discuss how to survive working for a toxic leader because sometimes ‘survival’ in the workplace is what it comes down to.

The purpose of the interview was to offer realistic advice for co-workers working under a toxic leader. The focus is on helping individuals effectively reduce and/or alleviate stress, safeguard their sanity, and navigate destructive leadership and/or cultural environments.
