Honing My Humility: Laser Surgery on My Leadership

We often read about the various attributes required of a leader, but what are our criteria?  One criterion I have always cherished is humility, because leaders we are appointed, not anointed. While many may find this hard to believe, there is always someone waiting in the wings to take your place. And as consumer advocate Ralph Nadar once said,

“The function of leadership is to create more leaders, not more followers.”

I discovered early in my leadership journey that humility is of great help. As I rose through the ranks or achieved accolades, I identified that occasionally my humility required a tune-up. To hone my humility took laser surgery on my ego by developing what I call my Daily Focus:

1.  Say a kind word.

2.  Be considerate.

3.  Be compassionate.

4.  Be hopeful.

5.  Spread joy and happiness.

6.  Share faith.

7.  Lift spirits.

8.  Learn to serve.

Do I accomplish all eight of these daily?  Of course not! Geez, I’m only human, but that is where the ‘honing’ comes in. Laser surgery is one of my specialties. I find that this exercise keeps me grounded and calmer.

How do you hone your leadership attributes to ensure humility is one of them?
